REDS SIGN FRENCH YOUNGSTER

August 31, 2007
Paul Eaton 31 August 2007
Liverpool have beaten the transfer deadline to snap up the services of French youngster Damien Plessi from Lyon.
The 19 year old holding midfield player will be added to the reserve ranks at Melwood.

“He is a good player, big and strong, and we’re sure he’ll do well for us,” said manager Rafael Benitez today.

“He’s only a young boy with plenty of time to work on his game but it depends on his progress how quickly he can force his way into the first team.”

RICK ON THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DRAW

August 31, 2007
Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry claims the club feels “comfortable” with the way the Champions League draw panned out yesterday.
The Reds were drawn against Portuguese champions Porto, French side Marseille and Turkish runners-up Besiktas.

Parry said: “I think the groups are pretty evenly spread. I don’t think there’s any one group you’d look at and wish you were in it. I guess on that basis we feel comfortable enough.

“Turkey is a long way but we’ve avoided some of the more gruelling trips, and of course we have happy memories of Istanbul as well.

“We’ll renew acquaintances with two Liverpool old boys in Marseille, Bolo Zenden and Djibril Cisse, and we also know Porto well after travelling there one or two times over the past couple of years.

“At the end of the day you take anyone, we’re just delighted to be there.”

RAFA NOT EXPECTING NEW ARRIVALS

August 30, 2007
Rafael Benitez today revealed it’s unlikely there’ll be any new arrivals at Anfield before tomorrow night’s transfer deadline.
The Liverpool manager admitted he has scoured the market to assess what might be available, but has decided he’s happy with the squad at his disposal.

Reserve striker Besian Idrizaj has today completed a season long loan deal with Crystal Palace, but Benitez insists there’ll be no major activity to report before the window closes.

“We were checking some options for the first team squad yesterday, but it’s very difficult to find the right players this late. I don’t think we will be signing anyone now,” he said.

“Rick, Foster, Eduardo (Macia) and I looked at some options, but we decided we don’t want to sign a player just for the sake of it. It has to be the right player and not for crazy money.”

Despite continued speculation linking Peter Crouch with a last minute exit from Anfield, Benitez has once again reiterated he has no interest in selling his striker.

“There has been no bid for Crouch, certainly not before this morning anyway,” said Benitez. “I have the same idea now as I’ve said before. I don’t want to let anyone go. I’ve spoken to the player and he knows we need him.”

Ujfalusi Snubs Reds

August 30, 2007

Tomas Ujfalusi’s agent Pavel Paska has claimed that Liverpool made an enquiry about the availability of the Fiorentina defender.

The Czech Republic international has 12 months remaining on his present deal and was linked with a move to Sevilla earlier this summer.

With Jamie Carragher currently out injured after sustaining a broken rib, Paska explained that Rafa Benitez was keen to secure the player as defensive cover.

However Ujfalusi is only keen on a move to Spain and has reportedly turned down the enquiry.

“Liverpool have a problem as Jamie Carragher has picked up a serious injury,” Paska told Sport.

“Manager Rafael Benitez together with the club director Ricky Parry have therefore asked me if I could address the offer to Tomas.

“Tomas has consulted it with his family and told me that he was happy with life in Italy and that the only country he would move to is Spain.

“I have to respect his decision, nevertheless it has surprised me a lot. Liverpool never give this offer twice to one player.”

Liverpool Contact Juventus For Defender Boumsong

August 30, 2007

Juventus defender Jean Alain Boumsong is attracting interest from Liverpool.

Tuttosport says Liverpool have made a late move for the Frenchman, who has been made available by Juve this summer.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez needs to find cover after losing Jamie Carragher to a rib injury and selling Gabriel Paletta to Boca Juniors.

Reds Bid For Beast

August 29, 2007

Liverpool have tabled a bid of 20million euros (£13.5million) for Real Madrid striker Julio Baptista, according to Marca.

The Brazilian – nicknamed ‘The Beast’ – spent last season on loan at Arsenal but failed to shine consistently, although he did net four goals as the Gunners beat Liverpool 6-3 in a Carling Cup tie at Anfield in January.

After helping Brazil win the Copa America over the summer he was linked with a move for AC Milan, but it is now claimed Rafael Benitez has entered the bidding with an offer that may be enough to tempt Real to sell.

They are looking to raise money to enable them to make a fresh move for Sevilla full-back Daniel Alves, and Marca claims they could also be ready to sell Roberto Soldado to Benfica.
