The sides last met in April 2002 with Liverpool winning here 2-0. On the day Michael Owen was presented with the Ballon D’Or (European Footballer Of The Year) he scored twice. The win was the Reds seventh win in a row – the first time they had achieved the feat in the Premiership. In that game Steven Gerrard made his 100th league appearance for the club. The last Liverpool player to score a hat-trick against Derby was Emile Heskey in the Reds 4-0 victory at Pride Park in October 2000. It was his first for the club. A win today will give Liverpool their best opening to a season (after four games) for nine years and will equal their best ever start to a Premiership campaign. Liverpool have suffered only one defeat in the last 36 league games at Anfield. Alvaro Arbeloa is the only outfield player to appear for every minute of Liverpool’s five games so far this season.
